Sugar Cookies for Details & Frosting

This recipe is for making firm cookies to withstand frosting, detailed cutouts in cookie cutters, and giving.  Don’t make them too thin.  Preheat oven to 350 oF (177 oC)

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups flour

Cream together the butter and sugar.  Mix in the egg, milk, and vanilla.  Add the flour and salt.  This takes some work to blend well.  Chill the dough for ½ hour. This dough can be very crumbly, but work with it anyway and it gets better. Bake in the top third of the oven until the edges start to brown, 10 – 12 minutes.   The number of  cookies produced is variable based on thickness and size of cutouts. Approximately 2 doz.
